History of Caledonia Community Centre

The Caledonia Community Centre was built in 1977 thanks to the vision and hard work of numerous volunteers, members of the Caledonia Township Council, and financial support from the provincial government.  The community centre will turn 40 in 2017. Celebrations are being planned to mark this milestone.

Celebrating 40 years in 2017

Forty years ago, envisioning a prosperous and healthy future for our community, people joined forces and rolled up their sleeves to build Caledonia Community Centre.  This major feat was accomplished through cooperation, community spirit and the help of volunteers from all generations. Kids, parents and grand-parents cycled to raise funds; men and students spent the summer on the construction site and women organized suppers and activities.

The hall quickly became the pride of the whole community. Caledonia Community Centre is known as the best location to hold wedding parties and anniversaries, after funeral gatherings, winter carnivals, Halloween parties, danses, community events, galas, business meetings, conferences and more.

On Sunday May 21, 2017, hundreds of people gathered to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the hall during a community brunch.

There was an important meeting on the future of our community center on February 25, 2025 at 7:00 p.m.

Did you know that The Nation Municipality wants to change the way St-Bernardin, Fournier and St-Albert Community Centers are managed?

Actually, the municipality wants to hand over the property and management of these three centres to local volunteer committees.

What does the ownership and management of a community hall entail? It could include:

  • Building maintenance (repairs and renovations)
  • Parking lot maintenance (snow removal, asphalting)
  • Groundskeeping (grass cutting, flowerbeds, landscaping)
  • Hall rental management (bookings, contracts, collection of fees) and customer relations
  • Installation and tear down for events (moving, storing tables and chairs)
  • Cleanup of facilities (toilets, floor, kitchen, tables and chairs, etc.)
  • Bar operations (purchases, service, inventory management)
  • Programming (organizing lucrative community events)
  • Bookkeeping and insurance
  • Staff and volunteer management (recruiting, training, supervision, evaluation, recognition, dismissal)
  • Grant applications and management of funds
  • Reporting and management of accounts with authorities (Canada Revenue Agency, HST, WSIB)
  • Financial responsibility and viability
  • And any other related tasks...

Why does The Nation Municipality want to get rid of St-Bernardin, Fournier and St-Albert community centres?

The financial situation of the municipality would be the source of this change desired by elected officials.

The Limoges and St-Isidore community centres would still be managed and maintained by municipal employees (and paid for by all taxpayers).

All community centres within The Nation run a deficit. Together, the Limoges Sports Complex and the St-Isidore Arena  represent a yearly loss of approximately 1.45 million dollars. The annual combined operational deficit for St-Bernardin, Fournier and St-Albert centres is approximately $180,000.

What do you think? Do you have any questions? Please attend the public meeting organized by the municipality on February 25, 2025 at 7:00 at Caledonia Community Centre.

The municipality is also holding meetings in St-Albert on February 19th and in Fournier on March 4th, both at 7:00 p.m.
